Our Surfboards
We make 3 shapes of radical sustainable wooden surfboards suitable for early intermediate to advanced surfers. They’re built hollow with an internal skeleton, like a plane wing, out of a wood called paulownia that is very lightweight and rot-resistant.
We named our boards after some of our favourite sea creatures, which seemed to us like the most natural thing in the world, particularly as the boards reflect the characteristics of the animals. We also don’t make an enormous selection of boards. We focus on versatile, easy to ride shapes that are suitable for a range of body-types, abilities and wave sizes, but ultimately suit a more relaxed, harmonious style. Aggressive surfing is really not our thing, whether you’re up and riding or waiting in the line-up.
The bespoke aspect to our process lies in the shaping of the tails and rails, which we fine tune to each surfers wants or needs. If you want one, see if there are any bargains on our In Stock page, or get in touch and let’s talk:
a modern fish
5’11 x 20 x 2 ½
40 litres
Twin fin setup with FCS 1
from £2100
The Snapper really lives up to its name. For a board with a flat rocker, it’s still super snappy and you can jump it up and down the line before finding the lip or arcing a tight cutback. Unlike a retro fish, the curved template trades off modern manoeuvrability against the flat line speed, whereas the fatter rails keep you afloat on the more mushy UK surf. With volume kept through the whole length and a distinct concave under the chest, paddle speed is markedly better than an equivalent sub 6-footer. The strong flying V in the tail serves to channel water onto the fins for additional hold and drive. Can be made as a rounded pintail thruster as well as a modern mini sims.
a midlength speed ‘egg’
7’2 x 20 ¾ x 2 ¾
49 litres
2+1 fin setup with FCS 1
From £2300
Inspired by Donald Takayama’s Flo Egg and James Otter’s Coaster, Ben says this is the best board he’s ever ridden (which is extraordinary given he’s a longboarder). It’s truly a board for every occasion and handles with a supremely smooth flow, reminiscent of Gerry Lopez’s original Lightning Bolt boards when setup as a single fin. With a flat rocker and enough volume in the middle third to paddle into almost anything, the Yellowfin will catch and carry through 2 foot summer peaks as well as help throw you into 3 metre monsters. The modern blended rails and rear double concave helps you find real top turns and proper cutbacks when stepping down from a bigger board, while the pin tail and light concave under the chest helps increase speed, flying line stability and wave count (and therefore wellbeing) when stepping up from a classic shortboard. It is in this board, in particular, that the additional weight of a wooden board greatly benefits the riding experience as you effortlessly fly through dead sections, plus a 70kg person can happily duck dive her.
a ‘summer classic’ longboard'
9’2 x 22 ¾ x 3 ½
88 litres
2+1 fin setup with FCS 1
from £2500
This is a proper log. Get her going and she’ll catch waves that most of the other longboarders will miss, but because of her relatively modest length, you can still move her about. Her exaggerated rocker will keep you from nosing under steeper drops as well as helping you easily fade and trim going down the line. With a big concave under the nose and front third, you get plenty of lift for nose-riding and paddling in, while the flying V hull profile (double concave with a deeper spine) under the tail allows smooth pivot turns as well as giving added stability. Inspired by the performance of Kym Thompson’s competition longboards (Torquay, Australia i.e. Bells Beach), we generally shape this with sharp-ish 70-30 rails throughout to boost her manoeuvrability.
a high performance longboard
9’1 x 22 ½ x 3
68 litres
2+1 fin setup with FCS 1
from £2500
Inspired by Skindog’s Peacemaker, the ‘Grey’ is a full on high performance nose-rider. Taken from the Californian school of wide noses, high hips and pinched tails (vs. the Aussie school of the ‘pigs’ with narrower noses), this board will do whatever you want it to. Ride 1 foot peelers at Gwynver, hang ten for tiiiiime at the Pumphouse lefts in Cayton Bay, drop into Thurso on an overhead day, or take her on safari to Baja, she’ll do anything for you. The big spoon nose, flying v hull around the fins, moderate rocker, blended and slightly pinched 60-40 / 70-30 rails, and squashed pin tail are the product of 60 years of surfboard design, and the reason these types of boards are sought after all over the world.
